The Labor Market Information Center has released the December 2011 Online Job Openings Report, a monthly recap of online job openings and resumes activity from North Dakota’s largest labor exchange system. Online job openings totaled 20,195 open and available positions in December 2011. Openings were higher by 2.9 percent (+568) over the prior month and 107.0 percent higher (+10,440) than one year ago. Preliminary estimates indicate North Dakota employment expanded on a year-over-year basis in December. Employers reported an estimated 22,000 more jobs when compared to December 2010, a 5.7 percent gain. For a detailed breakdown, visit the Jobs Report page.


Preliminary labor force statistics indicate North Dakota’s December not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.2 percent. The December statistic is higher than November's rate but lower than the 3.8 percent rate reported one year ago. Adjusted for seasonality, North Dakota’s December unemployment rate was 3.3 percent, down from November. The U.S. rate was 8.5 percent. In December 2011, North Dakota initial claims fell 10.2 percent (-485) when compared to December 2010. Of the major industry categories, Construction reported the largest year-over-year numeric decrease with 196, followed by Government (-86) and Natural Resources and Mining (-65). Two industries, Manufacturing and Financial Activities, reported over-the-year increases in claims of 21 and 6, respectively. The county with the largest numeric decrease over the year was Ward with -125, a 31.5 percent decrease, followed by Cass (-100), and Burleigh (-69). A majority of North Dakota's counties (64 percent) reported over-the-year decreases in initial claims filed, while one county reported no change in claims and the remaining eighteen reported increases. Most counties with increases reported gains of five claims or less. In late December 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau released the first set of population estimates to be published since the official 2010 Census state population counts were released a year ago. North Dakota ranked as the 5th fastest-growing state between 2010 and 2011 (+1.7 percent). By contrast, North Dakota was 37th in percent growth between the 2000 and 2010 censuses. North Dakota total population grew by 11,341 between the 2010 decennial count and the 2011 estimate. North Dakota's 2011 population estimate was 683,932, which is greater than the previous high set in 1930. Overall, Texas was the fastest-growing state (+2.1 percent) and reported the largest numeric increase in residents (+529,000). More detailed 2011 population estimates will be released throughout 2012 including the total population of counties and incorporated places, as well as national, state and county population estimates by age, sex, and race.
