The Labor Market Information Center has released the April 2012 Online Job Openings Report (OJOR), a monthly recap of online job openings and resumes activity from North Dakota’s largest labor exchange system. Online job openings totaled 24,059 open and available positions in April 2012. Openings were higher by 16.0 percent (+3,311) over the prior month and 66.2 percent higher (+9,584) than one year ago. For additional details, please visit the Online Job Openings Report page.
The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program uses a standardized, automated approach to identify, describe, and track the effects of major job cutbacks, using data from each state’s unemployment insurance database. North Dakota’s first quarter (Jan-Mar) 2012 Mass Layoff Statistics report was recently released. North Dakota reported 27 layoff events in first quarter 2012 which is up from the 26 reported a year earlier. Total worker separations totaled 468 in first quarter 2012 which is a drop of 325 from a year earlier. Visit our Mass Layoff Statistics page to view the current report or to access additional quarterly or annual reports back to 2000.
Alternative measures of unemployment are also referred to as labor underutilization. In addition to the headline unemployment rate (U-3), there are five additional measures (U-1, U-2, and U-4 through U-6) that either broaden or narrow the scope of unemployment. First quarter (Jan-Mar) 2012 data were recently released and show North Dakota continued to record the lowest rates for all six measures, including a U-3 of 3.5 percent, a U-1 of 1.1 percent, and a U-6 of 6.3 percent. Only six other states had U-3 values of less than 6.0 percent over the latest four-quarter average period: Iowa, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming. These states also had among the lowest rates for all of the other alternative measures. Nevada reported the highest rate for all six alternative measures of labor underutilization ranging from a U-2 of 8.0 percent to a U-6 of 22.3 percent. Due to sample limitations, geographic detail is limited to the U.S. and state-level. Data for smaller geographies are not available. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics made these data available at the state level beginning in 2003 and has been updating the data quarterly. A labor underutilization rates spreadsheet with all the state data and definitions can be found in our Economic Data Center on NDWIN.
The 2012 edition of Wages for North Dakota Jobs is now available. The publication is an annual reference guide providing hourly and annual wage and employment estimates for most occupations in the state and its metro and nonmetro areas. The publication is available exclusively online and will no longer be printed by the Labor Market Information Center. The new wage data are also available interactively by visiting Analyzer.
