NEXT UPDATE: September 15, 2017 [August 2017 Data]
Preliminary estimates indicate North Dakota's July 2017 not seasonally adjusted employment decreased 0.8 percent (-3,400) from the prior month but is up 1.6 percent (+7,000) from the same period one year ago. Five of 13 industries reported year-over-year employment decreases led by Retail Trade (-1,500) and Other Services (-700). Eight industries reported year-over-year increases in employment led by Mining & Logging (+4,300), Transportation, Warehousing, & Utilities (+1,200), Professional & Business Services (+1,200), and Leisure & Hospitality (+1,200). Of North Dakota's three metro areas, Fargo posted an employment gain of 2.2 percent, while Bismarck and Grand Forks reported losses of 1.2 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively.

The Jobs Report is updated monthly using data from the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program. July 2017 is the most recent data available. The report is a snapshot of the state's current labor market and summarizes nonfarm payroll employment estimates for North Dakota and its three metro areas (Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks). Effective with the July 21,2015 release of June 2015 data, the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released new data series: (1) total nonfarm, all employees, 3-month average of the seasonally adjusted over-the-month change, in thousands for all states and selected metro areas, and (2) total private, all employees, 3-month average of the seasonally adjusted over-the-month change, in thousands for all states (at the statewide level only).
